5 Tips to Avoid Overpaying for Your Health Insurance

December is the perfect time to review your health insurance. In the Netherlands, you can switch providers until December 31 and doing so can save you dozens or even hundreds of euros each year. But what should you look out for? These five tips help you save money without sacrificing care.

1. Compare Health Insurance Providers 🔍

Many people stick with their current provider, but switching often pays off. Use independent comparison websites to review premiums, coverage, and terms in a side-by-side comparison.

2. Consider a Higher Deductible 💶

Are you healthy, rarely see the doctor and don’t use much medication? Then raising your deductible from € 385 to, say, € 885 might be worth it. This can reduce your monthly premium by € 20 to € 30.

⚠️ Important: if you do face unexpected medical costs, you’ll need to cover the full deductible yourself.

3. Pay Your Premium Annually Instead of Monthly 📅

Many insurers offer a discount (1% - 4%) if you pay the full year upfront instead of monthly installments. It may seem like a small saving, but on a premium of €1,800, that’s €18 to €72 per year.

👉 Tip: use money from your savings account for this or create a “health insurance” savings goal in the Grassfeld app to ensure you’ve saved enough by next year.

4. Choose Between a Natura or Combination Policy

As of 2025, the restitution policy is no longer available, but you can still choose between these two types:

  • Natura policy: Usually the cheapest. Your care is fully covered when you go to a contracted provider (like a hospital or physical therapist your insurer works with). If you visit a non-contracted provider, you’ll typically pay part of the cost yourself.
  • Combination policy: Slightly more expensive, but offers more freedom of choice. Some care is still reimbursed even if the provider doesn’t have a contract with the insurer. Useful if you want to choose your own specialist or if your hospital isn’t contracted by the cheapest insurer.
👉 Tip: always check whether your GP, pharmacy or hospital is contracted by the insurer you’re considering. You can do this via the insurer’s online care finder. For most people, a natura policy is enough, but if you value freedom of choice, go for a combination policy.

5. Only Choose Supplemental Insurance If You Really Need It 🦷💪

Supplemental plans may sound appealing, but they often cost more than what you’d spend out of pocket.

  • Only go to the dentist once a year? It’s probably cheaper to pay directly than to purchase dental insurance.
  • Occasionally need physical therapy? Do the math to see if the premium is worth the likelihood of using it.
👉 Tip: look back at your healthcare usage over the past two or three years to decide whether extra coverage is worth it.

Never Overpay Again with Grassfeld

Health insurance is mandatory, but overpaying isn’t. By comparing smartly, adjusting your deductible, and reconsidering supplemental packages, you can save a lot.

👉 In the Grassfeld app, you can create a “healthcare” category to track exactly how much you spend. This allows you to evaluate whether additional coverage is worth it for next year and whether raising your deductible is a financially sound decision.
