Grassfeld vs. YNAB: the key differences

YNAB: Decide what your money should do first
YNAB is much more than a digital household ledger. At the heart of it is the YNAB method: give every dollar a job. Instead of mainly looking back at where your money went, you assign your money to your priorities in advance. In that sense, the philosophy is similar to the envelope method.

For example, when you receive your paycheck, you might immediately set money aside for rent, groceries, a vacation, an annual insurance bill, and a financial cushion. With so-called targets, you decide how much to set aside for a category and when you will need it.
For someone who wants to manage their money deliberately using one budgeting method, that is a strong concept. YNAB also offers a loan planner, goals, and reports on things like your spending and net worth.
Grassfeld: budgeting as part of the bigger picture
Grassfeld also supports budgets, but places them within a broader overview of your finances. With Light, you can create budgets, track savings goals, manage debts and loans, and connect one bank account, among other things. Premium+ adds advanced analytics, unlimited financial reports, shared budgets and savings goals, and unlimited bank connections.
The main difference is the approach. YNAB teaches you a specific budgeting method. Grassfeld aims to bring different parts of your financial life together in one place.

And since both apps help users spend their money more consciously, the price difference between Grassfeld and YNAB is substantial. Grassfeld Light costs €1.99 per month, and Premium+ costs €3.99 per month. YNAB currently charges $14.99 per month or $109 when billed annually.
Grassfeld Intelligence: from numbers to answers
One important difference is Grassfeld Intelligence. The personal finance AI assistant is available with both Light and Premium+.
That changes how you view your financial overview. Suppose you want to know whether a weekend trip fits within your budget. You can review your transactions, budgets, and savings goals yourself, but you can also ask Grassfeld Intelligence a direct question about your situation.
For example: “Can I spend €500 on a weekend trip this month and still stay on track with my savings goal?”
Grassfeld Intelligence can use information that is already available within Grassfeld, such as your spending, budgets, and savings goals. Grassfeld Intelligence also helps you with features such as forecasting the impact of a budgeting decision, analyzing your financial runway, and planning debt repayments.
According to its privacy policy, YNAB also uses AI and algorithmic logic for things such as transaction categorization, spending insights, and support. YNAB also offers an API that allows external AI tools to be connected to a YNAB plan. At the moment, however, it does not describe a built-in conversational assistant comparable to Grassfeld Intelligence that directly answers questions about your personal finances.
Grassfeld or YNAB: which one is right for you?
Do you mainly want to decide in advance where every euro will go? Then YNAB is a solid option. The app is built entirely around that way of planning your money.
Do you want to do more than budget and also analyze your broader financial situation, manage savings goals and debts, and ask a financial AI assistant questions about your personal finances? In that respect, Grassfeld has more to offer. In addition, the monthly prices of both Light and Premium+ are significantly lower than YNAB’s.
