It happened to Shane Mac, a tech entrepreneur and CEO of software company XMTP Labs. Mac connected Grok Bot to his personal bank account and used the AI as a kind of personal financial assistant. His idea was simple: Grok was only allowed to view his finances (read-only) and help him better understand what he was spending money on.
Still, things went wrong: Grok Bot posted Mac’s bank balance and personal expenses under his name in his company’s Slack channel (!). This allowed employees to see his gym payments, home renovation expenses, and credit card charges.
“Read-only”
Mac thought he had limited the risk by restricting the financial agent to read-only access to his finances. The agent also did not have access to Slack. But several Grok Bot agents used the same cloud computer. Another agent had access to Slack and could therefore access his financial information.
An AI does not need to be able to transfer money from your bank account to cause financial harm or a privacy breach. And read-only access does not automatically mean that the data it reads cannot end up somewhere else. That is precisely why financial AI should meet a higher standard than a chatbot you ask to rewrite an email.

This is exactly why we built Grassfeld Intelligence
Shane Mac’s intention actually made perfect sense. He did not want to endlessly search through transactions, accounts, and financial overviews. He simply wanted to ask questions about his own financial situation. That is undoubtedly the problem we built Grassfeld Intelligence to solve.
But we believed that financial AI should not be built in the same way as a general AI agent that is given access to all kinds of different apps and systems. That is why Grassfeld Intelligence has its own controlled environment, with clear boundaries and multiple safeguards governing how financial information is used.

An AI assistant for better understanding
That is where AI becomes especially interesting for your personal finances. A financial dashboard can show you that you spent €420 on groceries this month. An AI assistant can help you understand what that means. For example, you can ask:
- Why am I spending more than usual this month?
- Am I still on track for my vacation savings goal?
- How much room do I still have in my budget this month?
- Can I spend €600 on a weekend trip without putting my other plans at risk?
That is where the real power of financial AI lies. You do not have to compare transactions, charts, budgets, and savings goals yourself. You can ask a question in plain language, and Grassfeld Intelligence helps you understand the financial information that is already in Grassfeld.
So it is not just about looking back at what you have spent. You can use AI to recognize patterns, look ahead, and explore scenarios before making a financial decision.
Clear boundaries
That is why we did not simply add Grassfeld Intelligence to Grassfeld as a chatbot. The assistant was specifically developed for personal finances, with clear boundaries and controls built in from the start.
Shane Mac actually had the right idea: let AI help you better understand your own money. But with information this sensitive, you want an AI that was designed specifically for that purpose from the very beginning.
